What do March Madness and Good Friday Have In Common?

Right, they’re both happening at the same time.

I don’t know about you but I’m feeling rather weird about the calendar this year. The time change has come early which has thrown me for a loop. And then you have St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament coinciding with Holy Week. What a combo!

This coming weekend, when much of the nation is usually seeking to focus on the culmination of Lent, attend special worship services (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter) and spend time in greater introspection and prayer, many will be distracted from those pursuits by filling out brackets, office basketball pools, and the 2-day TV marathon otherwise known as the opening round of March Madness.

On one hand I’m tempted to rail against a culture which prizes sports above the spiritual. Then again, I have a browser window open to the CBS Sports ticker with constantly updating scores. I suppose the word for the day is: ambivalence!
